libelous หมายความว่า (เป็นการ)โฆษณาหมิ่นประมาท หรือ (เป็นการ)โฆษณาใส่ร้ายป้ายสี ซึ่งคือเป็นการเผยแพร่ข้อความที่ไม่เป็นความจริงเกี่ยวกับบุคคลหนึ่งที่ตั้งใจใส่ร้ายบุคคลนั้นให้เสื่อมเสีย หรือเพื่อทำลายชื่อเสียง ไม่ได้เป็นเพียงการหมิ่นประมาทด้วยคำพูดแต่ต้องเขียนหรือพิมพ์ข้อความใส่ร้ายหรือทำลายชื่อเสียง

ข้อสังเกต: หากเป็นการหมิ่นประมาทด้วยคำพูด จะเรียกว่า slanderous
